Although scholarship has well established how early rock and roll encouraged and affected issues of sex in the baby boomer generation, this book asks how subsequent pop music has maintained that tradition.

The text discusses the gendered performances and biographical experiences of individual musicians, including Patti Smith, Rufus Wainwright, Etta James, and Frank Ocean, and how their invented personae contribute to musical representations of sexuality. Paul McCartney anticipated part of Lennon’s judgment when he sang, in the Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby” (1966), that a lonely unmarried woman lives in a fantasy, “wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door—who is it for?” Clearly, she never goes out without a cosmetic mask worn for some man’s approval, never to be received.
