ROLLING STONE'S WIFE FEARS OVER ALCOHOL STRUGGLES

THE ROLLING STONES guitarist RONNIE WOOD's wife will accompany him on the band's forthcoming tour in a bid to ensure he stays away from alcohol.

JO WOOD wants to prevent a return of the days when her hedonistic husband would consume eight pints of Guinness and two bottles of vodka daily.

So the former model will join the Stones in Boston, Massachusetts, next month (SEP05) for the start of their latest world tour.

At the height of Wood's alcoholism, she recalls, "I was recycling so many bottles I got a certificate for the most glass they'd (local recycling scheme) collected from one house."

Influential British Drummer Carlo Little Dies

Carlo Little, who filled in for Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts several times during the early '60s, died Saturday at age 66 after a battle with lung cancer. Little's résumé also includes giving the late Keith Moon drum lessons and playing with founding Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore prior to that band's formation. In 2002, he recorded his first solo album, Never Stop Rockin', which featured guest appearances by Ronnie Wood and Jeff Beck.

Mick Jagger Wakes Up With a Plan

NEW YORK - Keith Richards says if the Rolling Stones were a mom-and-pop operation, Mick Jagger would be the "Mum."

"Mick has to get up in the morning with a plan," Richards tells Newsweek magazine in its latest issue. "Who he's going to call, what he's going to eat, where he's going to go. Me, I wake up, praise the Lord, then make sure all the phones are turned off. If we were a mum-and-pop operation, then he'd be Mum."

The Stones' new tour kicks off Aug. 21 in Boston. Their latest album, "A Bigger Bang," is due for release next month.

"I could see why some people may think we're phoning it in after all this time," the 61-year-old Richards says. "But playing the music we do, and playing it with these guys, `Jumpin' Jack Flash' can be a new song to me every night."

"I mean, we don't need to do it to feed our families," he says. "We don't need to do it to prove anything."

Stones Start Up NFL

The Rolling Stones are ready for some football--and not the kind of football Americans call soccer.

The legendary U.K. rockers have signed a deal with the National Football League and ABC for the entire 2005-06 season of Monday Night Football.

Per the deal, the Stones will create multiple spots and intros for ABC's highly-rated weekly game.

The first taste of the promos will air Sept. 8 before the first game of the new season between the New England Patriots and the Oakland Raiders. The clips will feature footage from the band's Aug. 31 Detroit show.

NFL suits are clearly hoping the Stones deal will boost the league's "hip" quotient. While the Hank Williams Jr. "Are You Ready for Some Football" tune that has been airing prior to Monday Night Football since 1989 will not be replaced, the Stones promos will augment the tune.

The Stones, in return, will get massive exposure of their new material from their forthcoming Virgin Records release, The Bigger Bang, to their core demographic of middle-aged males. The all-new studio set is due in stores Sept. 6.

The legendary foursome already has a non-traditional co-branded concert-themed promo airing nationwide as part of a financial services commercial.

Synergy will be on the band's side this fall, as they embark upon a North American tour that will hit most major U.S. cities just as the NFL season gets underway.

After the U.S. dates, which wrap Dec. 1 in Houston, the tour then travels in 2006 to Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Japan, Europe and perhaps China--a locale the band has been trying to play for years.

The last time the Stones undertook a similar large-scale jaunt was in 2002 for their Licks tour, which generated more than $88 million in ticket sales, per industry trade Pollstar.

The touring lineup will feature the core band: Mick Jagger , Keith Richards, Ron Wood and Charlie Watts.

Watts, who underwent radiation therapy to battle throat cancer last year, said he was "fine" at a press conference announcing the Bigger Bang tour and said he was looking forward to what may be Stones' final tour.

Tickets for the U.S. shows are already more than 95 percent sold out, according to Virgin Records.

The Rolling Stones To Play Surprise Gig Tomorrow Night?

Rumours are circulating that The Rolling Stones are set to play a surprise gig in Toronto tomorrow night ahead of their World tour.

The band have been in the city practicing for the tour and are believed to planning to make an appearance at the Phoenix venue in the city. Sources have told the Toronto Sun that Mick Jagger and co will play the gig as a thank you to their favourite city.

The source told the paper that doors will be open at the venue around 8pm and that the tickets will be first com e first served with a small charge to get in.

The three times that the Stones previously have warmed up for a world tour in Toronto, they played an intimate, next-to-impossible-to-score-a-ticket-to club shows approximately two weeks before the tour's first concert.

Jagger Says Song Not an Anti-Bush Tirade Wed Aug 10

NEW YORK - The Rolling Stones' upcoming album contains a song seemingly critical of President Bush, but Mick Jagger denies it's directed at him, according to the syndicated TV show "Extra."

"It is not really aimed at anyone," Jagger said on the entertainment-news show's Wednesday edition. "It's not aimed, personally aimed, at President Bush. It wouldn't be called 'Sweet Neo Con' if it was."

The song is from the new album, "A Bigger Bang," set for release Sept. 6. There is no mention of Bush or Iraq. But it does refer to military contractor Halliburton, which was formerly run by Vice President Cheney and has been awarded key Iraq contracts, and the rising price of gasoline.

"How come you're so wrong? My sweet neo-con, where's the money gone, in the Pentagon," goes one refrain.

The song also includes the line: "It's liberty for all, democracy's our style, unless you are against us, then it's prison without trial."

"It is certainly very critical of certain policies of the administration, but so what! Lots of people are critical," Jagger told "Extra."

A representative for the Stones said the group had no further comment about the song.

The Rolling Stones intend to kick off a U.S. tour in Boston Aug. 21.

CARLO LITTLE (THE ROLLING STONES)

When Brian Jones asked Carlo Little to join his fledgling band the Rolling Stones, the drummer refused, later saying: "I was a professional musician and it didn't seem worthwhile."

Already a successful drummer, who had instructed the Who's Keith Moon in the art and played with Screaming Lord Sutch and the Savages, Little opted to stay with Cyril Davies and the All Stars, recommending his friend Charlie Watts to Jones. Despite being described by Keith Richards as "the best rock and roll drummer in the world", Little remained one of rock's "nearly men".

The musician, who died from lung cancer at home in South Shields at the weekend, opted for a life of suburban contentment. A former drummer with the Royal Fusiliers, Little was renowned for his powerful sound. But he never joined a band that really made the big time. The Savages narrowly missed fame with the 1961 single "Till the Following Night". After splitting with the All Stars following a row with Davies, Little went on to play as a session musician with a string of bands, including the Hoochie Coochie Men, Buddy Britain and the Regents, Neil Christian and the Crusaders, the Echoes and the Flowerpot Men.

When he met his wife, Iris, Little renounced the musician's life in favour of a steady wage, becoming a greengrocer and driving a Mother's Pride delivery van. For a brief time, he ran a store in Wembley with the former Deep Purple bassist Nick Simper. He later ran two burger bars at Wembley stadium, where he might have played had he stayed with the Stones. In 1998, he was reunited with the band for a TV documentary.

TORONTO (Billboard) - The Rolling Stones entertained 1,100 lucky fans Wednesday during a Toronto club show in the midst of rehearsals for their upcoming world tour, covering such tunes as Bob Marley's "Get Up Stand Up" and Otis Redding's "Mr. Pitiful."

The group also played four cuts from the upcoming Virgin album, "A Bigger Bang," including opener "Rough Justice," the blues-driven "Back of My Hand" and "Infamy," featuring Keith Richards on vocals.

Other surprises at the Phoenix Concert Theater show included the "Emotional Rescue" album cut "She's So Cold," and the group also played such Stones standards as "Brown Sugar" and "Jumpin' Jack Flash."

"Thank you for leaving us alone but giving us enough attention to boost our egos," lead singer Mick Jagger said halfway through the show, acknowledging the band's frequent use of Toronto as a home base before kicking off major tours.
