"Playing with Jack Bruce at Carnegie Hall. That was exciting. We didn't even have an album out yet and we sold out two shows. My Grandpa was an electrician and years and years ago he worked there. It was a thrill for him and me when I played there.

--Some people didn't like the West/Bruce stuff as well as they liked Mountain.

Well, that's too bad! Jack is the best singer and bass player there is. I learned more from him than anybody. Cream was my favorite group. Mountain broke up and I went over to England to start a group with him.

--How long did it take you to ask?

One day. I remember the last show was at the Forum at Montreal. Felix didn't want to go on the road anymore. I didn't care. I knew we had come to an end. I had that in my mind all along. Felix made the mistake of introducing me to Jack when we played with Jack Bruce & Friends at the Fillmore. He took me over to his house and Jack and I got along real good. Felix was so heavily into drugs that he didn't want to go back out on the road. Corky and I were still young. We got on a plane and went over there. I went to the hotel and there was a phone in the bathroom. I went in the bathroom and closed the door and called him and said, "Jack, let's start a group." I've got the cover of Melody Maker on my wall that says, "Jack Bruce and Mountain." We did a tour without an album and then we recorded the album. I love some of that stuff."

Rock icon ERIC CLAPTON has no plans to reform 1960s supergroup CREAM again because his bandmates JACK BRUCE and GINGER BAKER struggle to see eye-to-eye. The BADGE hitmaker performed with Bruce and Baker for sold out shows in London and New York City last year (05), but the squabbling between the two became so bad, he would rather stay solo. He says, "They just scrap over everything."

Jack will appear in an all-star tribute to Jeff Healey. Jeff Healey: A Celebration will take place on Saturday, 3 May at the Sound Academy in Toronto. Funds raised will be donated to the Daisy's Eye Cancer Fund and to the Healey Family Trust.
