Look who's turned 64

Ringo Starr, the oldest and quaintest Beatle, turned 64 earlier this month. For baby boomers everywhere, his July 7 birthday was as sobering in its way as New Year's Day 1984, when reality finally overtook George Orwell's grim fable about a dystopian future. The British novelist finished writing "Nineteen Eighty-Four" in 1948 and simply reversed the decade numbers to get his iconic title.

At the time, 1984 must have seemed as far off and exotic as 2040 does now: Thirty-six years may be a blip on the calendar, but it's an eon in cultural terms. To those who grew up in the decades preceding 1984, that year was the future. Twenty years later, oddly enough, it still is, as if somewhere along the way the year slipped its historical moorings and took on a free-floating life as a symbol. Maybe that's why it was such a jolt when it actually arrived.

It feels a little bit like that this month. Some 37 years ago, nearly the same blip of time that separated Orwell from his fantasy future, the Beatles recorded a song enshrining their tongue-in-cheek vision of a very different future: "When I'm Sixty-Four," sung by Paul McCartney on the group's landmark album "Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band."

It was December 1966. The four were all in their 20s, and to them 64 must have seemed ancient, a fantastic age they would never reach, almost beyond imagining. John Lennon and Mr. McCartney gave it their best shot, though, penning a plaintive, gently satirical ditty about growing old with a beloved in the suburbs:

When I get older, losing my hair, many years from now,

Will you still be sending me a valentine,

Birthday greetings, bottle of wine?

If I'd been out till quarter to three, would you lock the door?

Will you still need me, will you still feed me,

When I'm sixty-four?

Fans hummed along and smiled at the very thought of youthful, cool, fabulous John, Paul, George and Ringo tottering about, growing bald, mending fuses and scrimping for a seaside holiday. Never going to happen, they thought -- just as 1984 was always just a couple more years behind the horizon.

They were right, in a way. Two of those young men never made it to 64, with Lennon shot at age 40 by an unstable fan and George Harrison dead of cancer at 58. Nor do the two remaining Beatles' lives even remotely resemble the idyll of ordinariness celebrated in the song. Mr. McCartney is a mega-celebrity and one of the richest men in Britain, and Mr. Starr is a puckish multimillionaire who lives in Monaco and plays at still having a career in music. It's a safe bet neither of them has to dig his own weeds on a Sunday morning.

Yet, here is the group anyway, courtesy of Mr. Starr, collectively on the threshold of senior citizenship. Where did the years go? A tiny shadow passed over baby boomers' lives on July 7, as the birthday that the Beatles themselves picked to epitomize the arrival of old age forced us all to take a second look -- first at them, not nearly so cool-looking now, and then in the mirror. (Orwell himself said in the last year of his life, "At 50, everyone has the face he deserves."

Mr. Starr, if he knows of that remark, must be thinking how much truer it is of 64.) And there's the rub, because of course it wasn't just the Beatles we could not imagine growing old back in the exuberant '60s -- it was ourselves. Most of the time it is easy to forget the inexorable progress of age, distracted as we are by work, family, illness, money and politics.

Even our own birthdays, which seem to roll round so much more quickly than they used to, fail to hammer home the truth. That requires an unexpected shock, such as running into an old school or college friend after many years ("He looks so old!") or the kind of unintended message from the past that an entire generation received this month:

Send me a postcard, drop me a line, stating point of view.

Indicate precisely what you mean to say,

Yours sincerely, wasting away.

Who knows what Lennon and Mr. McCartney meant to say when they wrote those slightly chilling lyrics back in 1966? Probably they had in mind nothing more profound than early memories of their own grandparents, pottering about in the Liverpool suburbs in the same bleak postwar years when Orwell was writing "Nineteen Eighty-Four" and struggling with the tuberculosis that would kill him before he reached 50.

Perhaps, on reflection, those of us who can see 64 coming should simply be grateful -- for that and for the Beatles' incomparable legacy. Yes, Ringo, we still need you now that you're 64. And thanks for the memories.
