The Everyone Orchestra, an interactive improvisational experience known for its’ benefit shows and festival superjams, is hitting the road for a short tour. The four Northern California dates will include feature guitar superstar Steve Kimock with conductor Matt Butler, guitarist Chris Haugen (Axis Brothers), Zilla’s Jamie Janover, Mojow and the Vibration Army and more.
Traditionally, the composition of the Orchestra is a revolving roster of all-star artists, and the impetus for the tour – four dates with the same cast, has evolved out of numerous one off dates when the cast of musicians and the audience is left hungry for more. “Often, the group is just starting to really hit its’ stride together, and then the shows are over. Short tours like this one, and others in the works, will allow the musicians to stretch themselves and the boundaries of the improvisational games we play,” says Butler who is also the founder of the group.

What makes Everyone Orchestra performances stand out from other jamband collaborations is the conducting. Butler, along with several others, facilitate the interactive jams using giant cue cards and projections which direct the musicians and audience alike.

The list of previous members of The Everyone Orchestra reads like a who’s who of jamband music and beyond including members of The Grateful Dead, Phish, String Cheese Incident and Derek Trucks, experimental guitar legend Adrian Belew and a growing legion of other stellar players.

INTERVIEW | Renaissance man Les Claypool has an album, a film and a novel coming out.

When Les Claypool's lanky frame strides onto the Boulder Theatre's stage Friday it will be trailed by a host of projects.

The virtuoso bassist, best known as the frontman for alt-rock gods Primus, has been embraced by metalheads and Zappa fans alike. His new solo album, "Of Whales and Woe," released May 30, revisits favored lyrical motifs of rednecks, oceans and twisted sexuality.

But this summer he will release a film and publish a novel, two long-simmering but previously unrealized dreams of the 42-year-old Richmond, Calif., native. We recently spoke with Claypool about his ever-expanding range of artistic endeavors.

Q: Your new movie, "Electric Apricot," lovingly skewers the jam band scene. What's it like?

A: It's a dry comedy mockumentary, much more like the Ricky Gervais stuff ("The Office") than "Spinal Tap." We had some fabulous appearances by Warren Haynes, Mike Gordon, Wavy Gravy and Bob Weir. So far it's hit three film festivals and won awards at all three.

Q: Your debut novel, "South of the Pumphouse," will also be published this summer. How did that come about?

A: It was a screenplay I wrote 10 years ago. It was one of those things - we put a production team together, raised a bunch of money, had team members come and go - but just never got the point where we made the film.

Q: Your book centers around a favorite theme of yours: fishing. Why the obsession?

A: I just grew up around it. As soon as I get off the phone with you I'm heading down to the ocean to chase some salmon around.

Q: Your song "Robot Chicken" is the theme for a new Cartoon Network show, and Primus wrote the "South Park" theme song. Do you have plans to do any others?

A: I've been approached to do these things, but it's more the creative element of the project that I think is exciting. When Matt and Trey approached us years

ago with the "South Park" thing nobody expected it to get on TV, let alone become an international megahit. We just did it because we thought it was funny.
Q: Have you turned anything down?

A: We got asked to submit some music to the "Joey" show (on NBC) and I was not even slightly interested. I don't know if it's so much an animation thing, but I think it has to be clever and original.

Q: As busy as you are I imagine you've still got more projects on the horizon?

A: Danny Carey (Tool) and Adrian Belew (Talking Heads, King Crimson) and I started working on a project a couple of years ago, so I wouldn't mind following through with that. There are tons of film projects we're itching to do. I'm also talking to the Primus guys about potentially doing some stuff next year.

Q: What's it like now having a solid career after being the hot thing in the '90s with Primus?

A: We were never really the in-rotation, MTV kind of guys. We always had to struggle for that stuff. When I see friends of mine in bands that get immensely popular I tell them the valleys are just as high as the peaks, and you can't survive it. Whereas my career is more about cruising along under the radar.

CD review: Sophisticated songs from Sara Hickman
Hickman reminds us that her voice remains a force

Texas singer Sara Hickman has spent so many years singing kids' music that it's easy to forget how good she sounds doing songs a tad more sophisticated than "Oh I Wish I Were a Fishy in the Sea."

Motherlode is a potent reminder. A two-CD concept piece on the pain and joys of womanhood, it's also a Whitman's Sampler of styles, ranging from Afro-pop ("Birdhouse") to hip-hop soul ("Enuf ") to a gypsy funk spin on "Mother's Little Helper." She's made her name as a folk singer, but Ms. Hickman shines at anything she puts her warm soprano on.

Disc one is the darker of the two, with tunes about depression, murder and women "Living in Quiet Desperation." The high point arrives in her version of Tears for Fears' "Mad World," which begins with a siren and grows more foreboding from there.

Disc two lightens the mood, especially when Ms. Hickman twangs up Amy Rigby's "Are We Ever Gonna Have Sex Again?" She reinterprets a dozen tunes in all, including "Learn You Like a Book," a chiming love song co-written by Dallas' Colin Boyd. But she's a fine songwriter in her own right, as she shows with "Comfort's Sigh," a haunting tune built upon a timeless melody.

Guest stars crop up all over the place, including the Austin string group Tosca, guitar whiz Adrian Belew and singers Kelly Willis and Jimmy LaFave. Shawn Colvin adds harmony on "Two Days Today," an infectious folk-pop strut that sounds, for lack of a better term, Colvin-esque.

But the guests never steal the spotlight from Ms. Hickman's expansive voice. She's least impressive when she's doing a dead-on Joni Mitchell impersonation, but those moments are few and far between. Motherlode is a rich source of jazz, gospel, country and soul without a single kiddie song in sight.

the saddest longest weekend of our lives.

deep silent pauses. staring into space.

punctuated by more comments of disbelief. despair. tears.

that big empty hole in your stomach.
like the hole left in our lives.

me, martha, and ken. team belew. now it's gone.

for 10 years we have been a constant family.
traveled the world together.

another phone call from a friend.

another e-mail from a well-wishing fan.

mike keneally's e-mail said it all:
"unbelievable. so sad. I'm so sorry."


it begins to sink in. as impossible as it is to believe, we will never see ken latchney again.

now it's monday morning. anytime now I should see ken's white suburu coming down the driveway. I should hear ken's king crimson greeting "haaauwwwww" from the stairwell to signal his arrival. I should walk downstairs and see him sitting at the computer in the studio control room. it was ken's studio really. we own it but ken made it his. like me, it was his favorite place to be. ken loved music. tom waits. mike keneally. les claypool. the grateful dead. phish. the residents. and most of all: frank zappa. ken had everything frank has ever done.



in his apartment the walls were covered in zappa and king crimson posters from around the world, some of them huge enough to cover half a wall. he had collected posters, t-shirts, and paraphernalia from hundreds of shows we had done together. ken was very proud of the work we had done. his living room was virtually a 5.1 listening room with an expansive couch. ken lived between his listening room couch and our studio.



he was, apart from his few close friends, a bit of a loner who kept to himself. a rare breed; a true bachelor. a few years back when ken was still attending our weekly friday night dinners at houston's restaurant he became friendly with a woman who worked at the bar. she pursued ken and at last he had the only "date" I ever knew him to have. later we all laughed when ken recounted his date: "I asked her over to my apartment and we listened to 4 hours of zappa!". as I said, ken was a true bachelor.



his passion was our work. ken never stopped refining his engineering prowess. after each weekend he would come in with a handful of notes, make some changes to various tracks, listen some more. ken was a worker bee. whatever it was that needed to be done, he would steadily go about doing it.



ken had pet names for certain people. mine was "cat daddy". martha's was "miss martha". he was a pillar in our lives. there was a sense of security in knowing he would be here most every day. his talent was so multi-faceted, he could do nearly everything for us. ken was a dedicated partner. a gentle person. I never saw him mad. he was cynical at times and acerbic like his hero frank, but not angry. some people misunderstood his quietly gruff manner, but several times in moments of real stress martha and I saw the deeply sensitive side of his nature.



he liked to go to concerts and he liked sharing his knowledge with people who came to our concerts. no matter what city we were in, he would set out walking taking funny pictures of whatever he saw. here is my favorite picture of ken taken in japan where we attended an exhibit of beatles photos.


unbelievable. just last week ken and I were touring across europe.

mostly it was a terrific experience but there were several times when thoughtless people made it very stressful. the last concert we did together was the herzburg festival in germany. in a tent backstage, ken's face full of sweat, he looked at me and said "we're getting too old for this, cat daddy". little did I know how prophetic his words would be.




although the full report is not released yet, the coroner told his parents that he had "hypertension" and "clogged arteries" so it appears to have been a heart attack which caused ken's death. nonetheless I believe he loved the life he had. he loved traveling the world. he loved the music.

I look back and it seems we did a hundred years of work together.

ken died in his sleep wednesday night july 26, 2006. he is survived by his mother barbara, his father al, his brother mark, the two nephews he adored, and hundreds of people who knew him only through his work.

in our hearts and memories he will live forever.

Adrian Belew Power Trio

До того, как влиться в стройные ряды King Crimson, гитарист Адриан Белью успешно сотрудничал с такими мэтрами, как Talking Heads, Фрэнк Заппа и Дэвид Боуи. В King Crimson Адриан попал после первого же концерта с Talking Heads. К музыканту подошел впечатленный выступлением Роберт Фрипп и пригласил в свою группу. Так Адриан стал полноправным участником легендарной King Crimson и пробыл с ней долгих четыре года. В 2000-х Адриан по-прежнему числится в составе King Crimson и работает с такими известными музыкантами, как Питер Фрэмптон и Тори Амос, создает свой проект Power Trio, с которым активно гастролирует по свету.

В субботу лично пожал руку пожалуй любимому из живущих сейчас музыкантов - Эндриану Белью.
Несколько фоток сделала моя жена, но было темновато для моего мобильника.
После концерта Белью вышел в бар, пивко, то сё. Вообще наш человек! Вернее Человечище!
Все таращились на него, пытаясь найти и так и не нашли ни единого атома звездной болезни.
На нем была футболка с динозавром, и выйдя к публике он улыбнулся издал свой знаменитый рев динозавра уже просто голосом,
а не своей уникальной гитарой.
Концерт был потрясающий, Белью уникальный гитарист, замечательный певец и грандиозный композитор.
Сплав с наилучшими пропорциями: гитаризма, поп-музыки и прог-замыслов.
Грамотное использование технологий (луперы, семплеры), короче - человек летит вперед на хайтек ракете с прекрасным стимпанк дизайном.
Никому за ним не угнаться. А какой человек! Впрочем я уже об этом говорил.
После Эндриана сфоткался с басисткой и барабанщиком. Барабанщик выступил с невероятным сольным номером, долго описывать смаки,
да и не все задумки осознал если честно - был высший пилотаж. Не джаз и рок, а именно математика - все как я люблю,
(условные цифры) - сочетание ритмов 11\17 7\13 итд. Непостижимые концептуальные фишки короче.

Так же придется высказать ложку дегтя, увы в адрес соотечественников:

1. Вышел организатор концерта (какой-то бизнесмен с грузинскими корнями),
он вначале спросил кто был на первом концерте в 2003 году.
Я был на нем и на многих Проджект Кримсон и радостно поднял руку. (Белью я видел в третий раз)
А затем бизнесмен спросил, а кто купил сегодня билет на концерт?!...
И было наверное человек 20 (сколько я успел увидеть при повороте головы, ну и я в том числе). А всего человек 300-400 наверно было.
Вот это окупаемость!!!
Бизнесмен поставил в пример концерт Белью в Батуми. Грузины (аджарцы), и билеты купили и вино потом попили.
И мотивация организовывать у них (в Батуми) концерты сохранилась.
А у нас... Не будут к нам так никто ездить, ибо - неистрибимая жажда халявы в русском человеке (с).
На Стаса Михайлова покупают билеты по хрензнает сколько тысяч, а на кудесника Белью люди ломятся по спискам по 100 рублей.

2. Прямо передо мной какой-то парень вначале с наглецой просил у Белью медиатор,
а затем, стоя справа от Белью наклонился к ... ПАХУ! Белью и стал просить своего друга сфоткать его так.
Ну он после такого?! П.. Мягко говоря "гей".
Друг пытался перевести в шутку "ты там не увлекайся!".
Белью был явно смущен, я от смущения "за державу" потерял дар речи.
Я был следующим в очереди, столько хотелось спросить,
но от волнения из-за предыдущего "почитателя" растерял не то что английские, даже русские слова.
Хотя я в целом совсем равнодушен к автографам, решил, что раз к Белью у меня такое особое отношение, то
попрошу авторгаф от Эндриана, от басистки и от барабанщика.


Но как говорится - запоминается в основном хорошее.
Надеюсь эти два досадных факта сотрутся из памяти этого грандиозного музыканта и он к нам приедет еще не раз.
И я буду ходить на все его концерты.

Ну как никому?А Фрипп?По последним сольникам Белью отчётливо понятно кто на него повлиял.А вообще,он мне тоже нравится.

Да Фрипп то конечно крутизна нимоверная.
Белью - он просто на стыке стилей. Именно в этом его уникальность. И именно это меня привлекает в музыке.
Коктейль, а не чистота стиля.
Как прогер Фрипп наверное на десяток процентов может сильнее и является для меня наикрутейшим прогером.
Но слушать постоянно прог - удел зануд.

Я не знаю. Все течет и изменяется. По 30 лет играть в одной группе - нужно иметь веские основания.
Когда они пропадают - честные музыканты расходятся, а нечестные - пичкают слушателей поделками или кормят тем, на чем они заработали свою славу (как в фильме с Аль Пачино).
Белью вроде где-то говорил, что неплохо бы с тем с кем играет жить через улицу.
А когда один в Америке, другой в Англии...
Главное, что он не повторяется, ищет новые пути. Хотя народ реагирует в основном на кримсоновские вещи.
Такой уж шоубизнес.

Никогда не перся ни от позднего Кримзона, ни уж тем паче от Белью - ничем не интересен, как и большинство америкосов.

Что именно в музыкальной индустрии, выражаясь Вашим языком, Вас особенно "прёт"?
И, если позволите, не почтите за труд пояснить Вашему покорному слуге, что именно привело Вас в ветку, главный персонаж которой Вам априори неприятен?
Не соблаговолите ли пояснить какой мотив Вами двигал в тот момент, когда решили публично поделиться своей нелюбовью к г-ну Белью с теми, кто по видимому не разделяет Вашей неприязни к "человеку с открытым сердцем". Заранее благодарен.
