LYNOTT Statue To Be Unveiled In August - June 11, 2005

The Roisin Dubh Trust has announced that the statue in Dublin to the late guitar legend Phil Lynott of THIN LIZZY will be officially unveiled the weekend of August 19-20, 2005.

The unveiling of the life size-bronze statue will take place in the late evening once all trading has ceased for the day, in the very busy trade and tourist area of Grafton Street in Dublin on Friday, August 19.

On Saturday, August 20, "The Boy Is Back In Town" (the statue unveiling tribute to the life and music of Philip Lynott) will take place at the Point in Dublin. The following are confirmed to perform at this event: GARY MOORE & Very Special Guests, ERIC BELL, BRIAN DOWNEY, SCOTT GORHAM, BRIAN ROBERTSON, BRUSH SHIELS, WHEATUS, THERAPY?, BIFFY CLYRO, SKYE, NUTONIC, JOHNNY FEAN, JACK L, DANIELLE PFIFFNER, JASON SWINDLE and ALASKA LYLE.

Commenting on his appearance at the event, Gary Moore said: "I'm taking part in the concert, out of my deep respect for Philip and on the very special occasion of the unveiling of his statue."

Thin Lizzy frontman Phil Lynott was finally back in town tonight after a five-year campaign brought a statue of the iconic figure onto a Dublin street.

Supporters of the famed singer showed their long-running admiration of the songwriter by funding the erection of the bronze statue almost two-decades after his tragic death.

His mother, Philomena, who unveiled the statue, said: “It is the proudest day in my life, for over 20-years I have been looking forward to it.

Philomena said it was special feeling to see him on the street against, as the life-sized figure of Lynott stood out in one of his favourite haunts city-centre haunts.

Hundreds of people lined Harry Street, just off Grafton Street, where Philomena unveiled the statue to rapturous applause.

His mother revealed supporters would now be working to launch a museum commemorating Lynott’s work in Dublin, as well as working to aid up-and-coming bands and charities.

There will be a tribute concert on Saturday, at Dublin’s Point Theatre, featuring former bandmates and friends – Gary Moore, Eric Bell, Brian Downey, Scott Gorham, Brian Robertson and Brush Shiels.

Many of his bandmates are due to take part in The Boy Is Back In Town gig on what would have been Lynott’s 56th birthday.

In an emotional tribute, Philomena said the singer was so well-loved people were flocking from far and wide to see him again.

Born in Birmingham and brought up in Dublin, Lynott started playing in groups in the Crumlin area before forming Thin Lizzy in 1969.

Lynott’s bagful of hit songs including The Boys Are Back in Town, Whiskey in the Jar, Jailbreak and Dancing in the Moonlight set the band apart from other Irish bands.

After the band broke up, Lynott embarked on a solo career and died in 1986, at the age of just 36, from heart failure as the result of a drug overdose.

His mother said she loved the sculpture by Paul Daly, which was cast in bronze by Leo Higgins.

She said: “I am happy with the statue, I love it, I spent many days down at the foundry advising him.

"We walked in a few times and we took a chisel out to make sure he got his chin right.”

His devoted mother said his music would leave an everlasting effect on the people of Ireland.

“He took a very old ballad The Whiskey in the Jar and gave it a good bit of rocking,” she laughed.

“I think after that he changed the course of history really, and he opened up great opportunities for all the up-and-coming young bands, and now one of those bands is known as the best band in the world. You know the boys from U2. He loved them, and they were all young boys.

“Whenever he went on tour he would take young Irish bands with him.”

Philomena added: “I love him forever and I will miss him forever. Life is awful without him but knowing all these people are loving him the way they do, they are like a big woolly cloak around me.

"They write to me telling me how much they love him and miss him. I am not alone in missing him.”

The Róisín Dubh Trust first approached Dublin City Council in January 2000 to get a statue erected to honour the rock star and plans were approved by the council in February 2001.

Audrey O’Neill, director of the Roisin Dubh foundation, said Lynott would have been quietly proud of the accolade in Dublin city

Sculptor Leo Higgins said: “There is a wonderful video of him singing a song Old Town, he was at the height of his success and he is walking down that particular area of Grafton Street and he just looks amazing. We captured that I think in the statue.”

This is the long awaited `Thunder And Lightning Tour'; the tour that was to prove Phil Lynott's and Thin Lizzy's last. The year is 1983, the venue Dublin and the stage is rockin'! To add to the already charged atmosphere of a concert in waiting, we have fast-forwarded in time to include nostalgic comment from Phil's band mates Brian Robertson and Eric Bell recalling their eventful times together, plus the indestructible footballing legend George Best and musician Brush Shiel, recalling their many memories of the rocker and friend. But all this is merely a prelude to what is a pulverising gig containing all conquering favourites such as `Whiskey In The Jar' and `Dancing In The Moonlight' and many more. The `Thunder And Lightning Tour' is quite simply the greatest performance from a group who were at their electrifying best.

Review

This is a fascinating and massively entertaining account of the life of Phil Lynott; a man whose talent is hailed universally but whose early life of poverty is less well documented. The programme seeks to address, with marked success, some of the unanswered questions.

We're treated to a rare insight and even rarer interview by his mother Philomena, who speaks fondly of her famous son, ranging from her trauma in the early years to the devastation of finding him close to death just 37 years later; the revelations are incredibly moving and remarkably informative.

Also featured on this amazing DVD are interviews by fellow band members Eric Bell and Brian Robertson and more, plus an interview with long time friend George Best; an interview that would sadly prove to be his last!

All this plus footage including the first ever release of their performance from Dublin's National Stadium in 1975 plus a bonus of rare and previously unseen Lizzy film. The title is completed by a pulsating CD containing 10 rare performance tracks with Phil's new band "Grand Slam" who went on to find their own group of followers, but whose expanding popularity was never to transform into a recording contract.

У меня всего 3 альбома Thin Lizzy: Thin Lizzy (1971), Jailbreak (1976), Black Rose: A Rock Legend (1979).
Группа действительно выдающаяся: красивая рок-музыка - мощная, лиричная, душевная, умная; отличное исполнение, уникальный дух группы, исконно-британские корни - всё вместе сделало Thin Lizzy незабываемыми.
И приятно, что впереди в моей жизни будут остальные пластинки ирландской супергруппы - жду знакомства с ними.

.......... и опять ни одного упоминания и даже ни одной темы об этой группе.
Почему - то все как - то думать про них забыли, а ведь они были вторым после Rory Gallagher ирландским актом добившимся популярности. Лично мне нравятся их альбомы до Fighting (включительно), а также Renegade и Thunder and Lightning. Cольники Линотта тоже прекрасны. На них Фил отошёл от хард - рока и начал играть совершенно другую музыку.
Его первый сольник Solo in Soho представляет собой коктейль из регги, волны, новой романтики (которая тогда только зарождалась) и многих других стилей. Второй альбом The Philip Lynott album (1982) менее разнообразен стилистически, но и на нём есть масса прекрасных моментов. Однако вернувшись к Лиззи Фил пошёл на угоду хмрыной аудитории и записал самый тяжёлый альбом в истории группы. К сожалению альбом стал последним не только в дискографии Лиззи, но и в жизни Фила.
