Законные родители этого проекта, Michel Sanchez и Eric Mouquet могут уже сейчас считать себя Бенни и Бьорном этнической музыки. Семь лет они ухаживают за роскошными внеземными ландшафтами, которые рисует воображение поклонников их творчества. Их музыка оставляет после себя живописные миражи, имитирующие в условиях обыкновенной домашней комнаты атмосферу присутствия во влажных экваториальных лесах Африки и с легкостью превратит темные стены ночного клуба в зеленый оазис посреди безжизненной пустыни Сахары.

Стартовав с двумя разноплановыми альбомами и несколькими сольными проектами, французы уже сегодня готовы вновь напомнить о себе свежими идеями, выпустив сингл "Madazulu". Их новый альбом "Comparsa" дебютировал 20 января.

Божественный "шум"

К DEEP FOREST в нашей редакции отношение особенно трепетное. Если помните, именно об этой группе мы поместили обширную статью в первом номере "Музыкалки" и поэтому, каждый раз обращаясь к нашим истокам, натыкаемся на нее. На этот раз мы попробуем, как можно меньше повторяясь, вновь рассказать о старых и новых DEEP FOREST, потому что уверены, что большинство из вас стали нашими читателями не сразу. Итак, приступим.

Эрик и Мишель были хорошо известны у себя на родине как продюсеры и сессионные музыканты задолго до появления идеи сотворить нечто вроде проекта DEEP FOREST в 1991 году. Несмотря на то, что в основном они работали с рок–группами, Санчес с 17 лет увлекался фольклором и туземной музыкой. С Эриком Мишель знался давно. Они часто виделись через общих друзей, контактировали и работали в одной студии. В один прекрасный момент Мишель не выдержал. Ему хотелось услышать чужое мнение по поводу его нового увлечения. Он пригласил Эрика к себе домой и "одарил" его уши божественным "шумом" своей в корне эмбиентной композиции. Эрику она явна пришлась по душе, иначе бы он не предложил сотрудничество. Через неделю они на всех пантах решили записать никак не меньше десятка песен вроде первой для дебютного альбома — общего детища.

Поначалу они и сами не верили в свой успех. Они четко понимали, что их проект никак не вписывался во временные рамки и не мог быть отнесен к какой–либо из установившихся в музыкальной индустрии категорий. "На тот момент это было чем–то немыслимо новым, — рассказывает Мишель. — По радио вы бы не услышали даже нескольких песен типа нашей "Sweet Lullaby". Там крутили музыку для нервных и душевно больных людей. И мы боялись наткнуться на обыкновение непонимание". "Поэтому, чтобы не очень огорчать себя, стали заниматься музыкой ради собственного удовольствия, — продолжает линию Эрик. — Мы просто хотели получить моральное удовлетворение от того, что оперировали новыми звуками, и, возможно, создали бы свое направление". Очень скоро их музыка для домашнего прослушивания приобрела широкую популярность. Посыпались номинации, награды, "золотые" и "платиновые" титулы. Альбомы "Deep Forest" (‘92) и "Boheme" (‘95) заняли не последнее место среди лучших современных работ в стиле "world music".

Мишель и Эрик получили доступ к богатой звуковой коллекции, собранной музыковедами со всего мира. Прихватывая с собой сумочки с DAT–ами и стереомикрофонами, они регулярно путешествовали по экзотическим странам и по возвращении чувствовали, что владеют целым состоянием. А так как они умеют делать практически все, оставалось только закрыться в студии.

Надо сказать, что оба француза — прекрасные аранжировщики, неплохие композиторы, клавишники и компьютерщики. Очень часто они начинают сочинять порознь, но в конечном итоге песню доводят до ума вместе. У них полное равноправие и даже одно и то же оборудование, что способствует полной совместимости и взаимодополняемости их собственных наработок.

Карнавал будущего

Многие думают, что DEEP FOREST — это чисто студийный проект, но это не так. В 1996 году, накопив достаточно материала для больших концертов, Эрик и Мишель отправились в свое первое турне. "Когда мы колдуем в студии, — треплется Эрик, — нас всего лишь двое, и это вполне достаточно, чтобы "оседлать" клавишные и компьютер. Нам нет нужды играть на гитаре или барабанах. Что касается сцены, мы уверены, что два человека, нажимающие на кнопки, это слишком скучно". Перед тем, как собраться в путь, ребята усердно подыскивали себе напарников, которые в кратчайшие сроки выучили бы два их альбома. Задумывалось, что человек, оказавшийся на сцене, не должен был своей мимикой делать вид, что повторяет сэмплы. "У каждого из них прекрасный неповторимый голос, традиционный для их страны, — говорит Эрик. — К нам пришли кубинцы, сенегальцы, камерунцы, болгары, поляки, итальянцы и, разумеется, французы. Поэтому весь ансамбль с легкостью мог представлять нашу планету на каком–нибудь вселенском музыкальном фестивале".

Концерты прошли с большим успехом. Смесь электрических и акустических инструментов создавала на сцене атмосферу грандиозного карнавала, достойного истории следующего тысячелетия. География их выступлений простиралась от австралийского континента и Японии до Восточно–Европейской равнины (Польша, Венгрия). Практически впервые коллектив появился на публике и сразу с 10 (!) музыкантами и вокалистами девяти различных национальностей. В общем, многие остались довольны.

Партнеры

Так уж повелось, что проекты в стиле "world music", так сказать, не очень спешат: мол, тише едешь — дальше будешь". Альбом раз в 3 года считается оптимальным. На стороне может быть куча других проектов — в данном случае "Windows" (‘95) и "Pangea" (‘96), но совместное дело не терпит поспешности. После солидного вояжа своей музыки в саундтреки нескольких картин третий альбом готовили с не меньшей основательностью.

"Comparsa" с кубинского диалекта означает "партнеры". А еще так называют стихийно собирающиеся уличные группы, которые летом слышны повсюду на Кубе и в Южной Америке. Название, естественно, не возникло отдельно от содержания альбома. Партнерами Эрика и Мишеля стали представители Мексики, Кубы, Мадагаскара и еще нескольких стран Латинской и Южной Америки, а сам диск приобрел отличное от предыдущих двух латино–африканское звучание.

В очередной раз безмолвный французский дуэт принялся расширять наши музыкальные познания, двигаясь в хаотичном направлении по географической карте нашей планеты. Эрик и Мишель были давно наслышаны от туристов об этих прекрасных местах, открытых самим Колумбом. После африканских фантазий "Sweet Lullaby" и восточноевропейской меланхолии "Boheme" им пришлось пересечь самый большой Тихий океан в поисках нового звучания. Новый альбом получился очень праздничным, он свободно может озвучивать знаменитый карнавал в Рио. Солнечная тема, универсальная в предыдущих работах коллектива, и на этот раз появляется с первыми звуками. В какой–то момент кажется, что это весенние лучи, но, прослушав весь альбом, понимаешь, что капель и половодье далеко в прошлом и на дворе летние погожие деньки. Хотя применительно к американскому климату это может быть полностью перевернуто.

Как всегда не обошлось без широких жестов. Дело в том, что французы решили последовать воли божьей и делиться авторскими правами на свои альбомы со странами, культурное наследие которых используется в произведениях DEEP FOREST. О конкретных суммах еще говорить рано, но, судя по предыдущим подобным акциям, эти страны получат очень значимые по их меркам суммы.

Список привлеченных музыкантов опять же очень велик. Из более или менее известных имен назовем только Wes Madiko из племени банту, сирийца Abed Azrie и мексиканца Jorge Reyes, флейтиста и перкуссиониста, очень увлекающегося традиционной культурой ацтеков. Знающие люди, несомненно, распознают здесь влияние знаменитого клавишника Joe Zawinul, основателя группы THE WEATHER REPORT.

Эрик и Мишель еще долго будут вспоминать хорошими словами одну 100–летнюю бабушку, с которой они познакомились и работали на Мадагаскаре. К сожалению, Mama Sana умерла еще перед тем, как они успели записать этот альбом. Но, к счастью, свою партию для открывающей "Comparsa" песни "Noonday Sun" она успела напеть. В этой же композиции вы сможете услышать молитву, которую ее друзья специально написали на ее похороны.

Французам вообще повезло на этот раз с женщинами. В Белизе они встретили другую талантливую даму. Ее зовут Марселла Льюис, и ее голос вы услышите в песне "Tres Marias".

Вообще все 13 поместившихся на новом диске композиций заслуживают отдельной истории, но раскрывать все секреты было бы просто неинтересно. Чужие тайны нужно уметь хранить, так что французский дуэт знает многое. Их музыкальные произведения, так не характерные для западной цивилизации, помогают цивилизованным, как они себя называют, людям стать археологами, не выходя из уютных квартир. Они не просто уничтожают культурные и языковые барьеры между различными культурами, они вот уже в трех альбомах поражают своей космополитичностью, решимостью задействовать все имеющиеся средства для решения духовных и экономических проблем стран третьего мира. Я могу даже сказать, что они формируют свой собственный язык, язык, с помощью которого человек, вероятно, уже совсем скоро научится понимать животных, заботиться о природе, а не только о себе самом. Это весьма трудная и почетная миссия.

This ambient techno/new age group are based in France. Their 'Sweet Lullaby' track was one of the most popular of its kind during 1993, with its rich, warm tones and ethnic instrumentation. It was based on the sampled voices of Pygmies drawn directly from the African rain forest. The duo in charge of proceedings were Eric Mouquet and film composer Michel Sanchez. Based in Paris and Lille, their collaboration was the result of Sanchez returning from Africa with boxes of records from all over that continent. However, most of the actual sounds used on the track were taken from record libraries. 'Sweet Lullaby' is the story of a young girl who tries to get her brother to stop crying by insisting that if he doesn't his parents will never come back. Remixes of the track were made by both Apollo 440 and Jam And Spoon. (Deep Forest in turn remixed Apollo 440's 1994 single, 'Liquid Cool'.) Deep Forest are now massively popular, and their album went platinum in Australia and won a Grammy for Boheme in February 1996 for the Best World Music Album. Boheme and Comparsa continued previous themes, visiting new areas of the world including Mongolia, Taiwan, India and Hungary.

Eric Mouquet and Michel Sanchez of Deep Forest are sound reporters. With voiceless musical duet, they Draw one voices from every corner of the world. When Deep Forest was released around one year after Enigma's MCMXC a.D., Deep Forest was accused by many people of stealing Enigma's idea of mixing traditional chants and sounds with electronics. Both albums use the latest in electronic keyboard technology, and both also use the original idea of mixing ancient samples as their main instruments. The fact that Enigma's album was released in December 1990, and that the Deep Forest didn't actually become a band until 1991 (finally releasing an album in 1992) makes it appear that Enigma could be part of their musicial inspiration. Comparisons of Enigma's second album, The CROSS of Changes, released in December 1993, to Deep Forest's second album, Boheme, released in mid-1995, also show strong similarities. Both albums still have the same principle of mixing ancient samples with modern electronics, and both albums use Eastern Europe as their source of samples. Furthermore, they are both majorly different from their predecessor, and have to date sold poorly in comparison to their first release. It is known from my writings to Enigma that both bands are not in contact with each other, and have no immediate intentions of working together. For now the evidence seems to prove that, despite their marketedly different use of ancient samples and modern technology, Deep Forest is inspired by Enigma.

Deep Forest is based on an original idea by Michel Sanchez. Consisting of himself and Eric Mouquet, Deep Forest is not an artist or a band, but instead "a concept ... a state of mind". It is music that should be not only danced to, but also listened to.

The idea that became Deep Forest started when Sanchez and Mouquet got together in 1991 after meeting on several occassions. Eric was writing, producing and playing rhythm & blues style music with Michel on the organ. While having dinner together, Eric suddenly heard a strange chant on Michel's tape deck. It was a chant from Sweet Lullaby. At this stage in their lives Michel had become interested in Africa while studying percussion at the Conservatory and had begun to collect every kind of sound compiled by various ethnologists. Eric, on the other hand, was involved in house music and other sorts of softer rhythms. He gave the chant to Michel to work on.

What eventuated was for them both to work in a thirty-two track studio, sampling a cappella voices from Burundi, Cameroon, Zaire and Chad, fashioning them into loops and interlaced melodies. And so Deep Forest was born - the collection, harmonisation and universal release of songs from throughout the world.
Have Deep Forest toured?
Deep Forest had their first known public concert on June 29, 1996 at the G7 closing show in Lyon, France. Pictures of them preparing on stage can be seen at http://www.showg7-lyon.fr/direct2.htm. After that time they embarked on a world tour which include Budapest (Hungary) on August 17, and Athens (Greece) on September 18. In October they toured Australia including Brisbane (21st), Sydney (23rd), and Melbourne (26th). On October 30, 31, and November 1 they played in Tokyo (Japan), before playing another show in Budapest (Hungary) on November 29. Finally they played in Zabze (Poland) on December 2, and Varsovia (Poland) on December 3. These shows were originally planned for late 1994 but did not eventuate. In July they did some more concerts in Japan (with Lala and Monika doing vocals and dancing). They had originally planned to do further concerts in the US in July and August 1998 (July 23: Los Angeles, July 24: San Francisco, July 26: Seattle, July 27: Woodinville, July 28: Portland, July 31: Chicago, August 1: Ann Arbor, August 3: Boston, August 4: New York, August 5: Washington DC), and Paris on September 21 but these were cancelled.

In an article from Sonic Magazine in April 1993, they discussed their planned world tour and the fact that they'll use three keyboard players, an African vocal choir, a drummer, a bassist, a percussionist and a troupe of dancers. They also mentioned that they'd use a sequencer only to run in some effects and to run the Roland RSS with the timecode so that they can recreate some of the spatial effects on Deep Forest (at the time of writing they were still unsure whether to use a standard Public Address system or to have speakers at the back of the venues to enhance the RSS effects). The line up for the final concerts which eventuated were Stefka Lordanova, Wes Madiko, Gino Ceccarelli, and Jackline Rodrigues on vocals, Mara Kane on backing vocals, Paolo Damanti and Jackline Rodrigues on keyboards, Fred Savinien Caprais, Oswaldo Hernandez, and Jackline Rodrigues on percussion, Didier Cresson on bass, and Neil Conti on drums. The show was advertised to go for two hours.
Have Deep Forest won any awards?
Deep Forest have won a few awards, mostly notably their Grammy Award on February 28, 1996 for Boheme. It was awarded the best album in the World Music category. They have also won the 1996 World Music Award for the French group having the most sales in the world in 1995.
Nominations Deep Forest have received include a Grammy Award for the best world album in 1993, MTV Awards for Sweet Lullaby as the best music video in 1993, and Victoires de la Musique Awards for best world album in 1993 and 1996.
