Ray Davies, the lead singer with the British rock band The Kinks, is recovering after being shot in New Orleans.

A police spokesman said Davies and a female companion were walking near the French Quarter at about 8:30 p.m. ET Sunday when two suspects approached them and grabbed the woman's purse.

Davies, 59, ran after the suspects, and was shot in the leg, New Orleans Police Department spokesman Capt. Marlon DeFillo said. The woman was not injured, police said.

The songwriter was taken to a hospital, where he was treated and released soon afterwards in good condition.

DeFillo said police had arrested one of the suspects and were seeking the other.

Davies' manager Deke Arlon confirmed the Londoner had been shot in the leg. "He was in New Orleans and was leaving a restaurant with his girlfriend last night," he told the UK's Press Association.

"They were attacked by two muggers who stole a handbag. He chased after them and he was shot in the leg.

"It is not really serious. He should be up and about in a day or so.

"The message that came back to me was that he is in good spirits."

Davies founded the Kinks, which was one of the most influential bands of the 1960s, with his brother Dave in London in 1963. Their hits include "You Really Got Me," "All Day and All of the Night," and "Lola."

He continues to perform four decades on and his songs went on to become hits for acts like The Jam, Van Halen and The Pretenders.

Davies became a Commander of the Order of the British Empire last week in Britain's New Year honors list for services to music.

I have spoken to the Doctors at the hospital and a close freind who is there. Ray is doing well although they will keep him in overnight. The thigh wound was clean and didn't hit anything major. Thank God for that.

Kinks singer's injuries more serious than reported

Ray Davies' injuries when he was shot in the leg as he chased a mugger are more serious than reported.

At the time of the incident in early January it was reported that the Kinks frontman was not seriously injured.

But a spokesman has now confirmed that he had to pull out of a scheduled appearance in New York this week on medical advice.

Davies had been due to perform alongside David Byrne and a host of other acts at the 14th annual Tibet House benefit concert at Carnegie Hall.

It would have been his first appearance on stage since the shooting. A series of UK concerts in April are still scheduled to go ahead.

A spokesman for the singer said: "Ray has been advised by his medical and insurance advisers that he cannot appear at the Tibet House due to the injuries he received in January.

"These injuries were more serious than originally broadcast in the media and Ray is still undergoing treatment. However, he is hoping to return to the UK soon."

Davies was shot at the beginning of the year in New Orleans as he chased two men who had snatched his girlfriend's handbag while he was staying in the city on holiday.

Davies Dedicates Honor To Fans

Accorded a title today (March 17) by Queen Elizabeth II, Ray Davies shared the honor with fans. The 59-year-old Kinks songwriter/guitarist/singer leaned on a walking stick and wore a dark suit and tortoise-shell sunglasses to receive the title of Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) at Buckingham Palace in London.

"This is for the people who supported my music over the years," Davies said. "I'm kind of reluctant to collect rewards. I usually back out of ceremonies. I'm kind of a shy person.

"This is for the fans of my music," he added. "It's theirs."

Shot in the leg by a mugger two months ago in New Orleans, Davies said he hopes to be back onstage soon.

"I will get better and I'll be back jumping around onstage," said Davies. But, he admitted, "There is a lot of doubt whether I can perform in the near future."

A thief who snatched his girlfriend's bag shot Davies, who founded the Kinks with his brother Dave in the early 1960s.

"I chased after him. I have been asking myself why. One never knows how to react," Davies said. "Other people have said they would do the same. That's all I want to say about it."
