Out now on CD is Blue Suede Shoes: A Rockabilly Session, the soundtrack to the legendary Carl Perkins'1985 Showtime special featuring George Harrison, Ringo Starr, and Eric Clapton. The special, which commemorated the 30th anniversary of Perkins writing "Blue Suede Shoes," also featured guest appearances by Rosanne Cash, Dave Edmunds, and two thirds of the '80s rockabilly group the Stray Cats -- drummer "Slim" Jim Phantom and bassist Lee Rocker.
Highlights include Starr and Clapton performing "Matchbox," Starr's solo turn on "Honey Don't," and Harrison singing and trading licks with Perkins on "Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby," "Your True Love," "Glad All Over," and the Les Paul and Mary Ford standard "The World Is Waiting For The Sunrise."
The Stray Cats'Lee Rocker told us that he's still a die-hard Perkins fan and continues to play his songs live: "It feels great to do it, you know? I did have a real friendship with Carl that went back about 15 years or more, and he was just a huge influence and a great friend and obviously one of the guys who invented rock 'n'roll. So I mean, really, since he passed away, every gig I'll do one or two songs, so it's kinda nice to continue that."
Perkins was inducted in to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. In 1996, he released his final album, Go Cat Go!, featuring contributions from Harrison, Starr, Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, John Fogerty, Willie Nelson, Tom Petty, and many more.
Carl Perkins died in 1998 from throat cancer after suffering several strokes.
