A CD planned for release in England Sept. 17 is a newly discovered tape of Ringo Starr performing with Rory Storm and the Hurricanes. Called “Live at the Jive Hive” on Rock Star Records, it features the band performing in March, 1960. The cover photo, interestingly, shows Ringo Starr playing guitar and not on drums.
The track list features covers of Elvis Presley, Little Richard, the Everly Brothers, Eddie Cochran, Little Richard, Carl Perkins and Johnny Otis. Three of the tracks are home recordings.
The disc, which was reported by Beatlefan, was listed on Amazon.co.uk as late as Friday, but is no longer there, a possible indication of a legal difficuly. We did find it still listed online at Proper Music.
According to notes by author and BBC Merseyside radio host Spencer Leigh, the gig was professionally recorded. He says it's the first time a full set from a Merseyside group recorded before 1963 has been released.
The track listing includes "Honey Don't," which Ringo sang with the Beatles.
Ringo joined the group on March 25, 1959 and was with them until he left to join the Beatles on Aug. 18, 1962. Recordings unearthed by Rory Storm and the Hurricanes have been rare. A cover of "America" from "West Side Story" that has been around collector's circles for years was said to have had Starr on it. But after a check with his representative, the word came back that he was not on the song.
