Ellen DeGenere's show: Here is the transcript of the interview with Paul. On November 14, 2005.
Ellen: He's the man who means so much to millons of fans all over the world. Sir Paul McCartney !
(Paul appears, meanwhile Maybe I'm Amazed is heard. The audience gave him a standing ovation)
"Now, before we continue on is it- Do I call you Sir? Do you like to be called Sir?"
Paul: (joking) KING!... Just call me Paul. (Laughter)
Ellen: Okay, Paul
Paul: Okay, Ellie
Ellen: Okay, Pauly-Paul
Paul: Okay, Ellie-baby
Elle: Oh! This is so exciting. Now you are so loved and you have such an influence on all of us. What's is like to be you?
Paul: Weird, man (Laughter) Really, You know what? It's actually great, but it has it's moments when you suddenly realize, you know, Oh my God, I'm that famous guy, but it's really very nice and I'm very thankful and I wouldn't and I don't want it any other way.
Ellen: That's good because you have no choice.
Paul: Exactly
Ellen: You are stuck being a huge icon and also you see the footage of you at the Shea Stadium and the Ed Sullivan Show. I know you were popular in England but were people doing that right way with you all? (Screaming)
Paul: No. Not at the very begining. They were throwing money at us to get off, but we fooled'em, we picked it up. They never threw after that. The screaming came later.
Ellen: Well, you know you are the cute one. Everybody was crazy about you.
Paul: Imagine, being "The Cute One" at 63. (Laughter)
Ellen: You are 63 and about to turn 64 and you wrote a song 'When I am 64'. How do you feel about that?
Paul: Fine! Great! I feel really good. A couple of my kids did say: Dad you have to disappear off the face of the planet next year.
Ellen: 'Cause 64 seemed very old then.
Paul: It seemed very old then, but I met a lady on holiday who said:
"Hope you don't mind, but I play one of you songs. I work on an old people's home and I play "When I'm 64'. I hope you don't mind- I had to adapt the lyrics to When I'm 84"
Paul: Because they all think 64 is young. So, I think that's a good idea. I might do that, too.
Ellen: You should. Re-Released it. Make it 104. We were going to live longer, they say.
Paul: I think that's a good bet.
Ellen: How did you meet John when you all started the band?
Paul: Yeah, we have a friend in common called Ivan. I was actually born on the same day as Ivan and he was a mate of John's and Ivan and I were at the same high school. He said: You should come along to this place. It was Wilton Garden Village.
Ellen: And the two of you wrote quickly. Right?
Paul: I started working with John and we actually didn't write immediately. He used to do cover versions, but what happened was, we'd be backstage and all the other bands that we were on before us would do our entire act. "Long Tall Sally" oh! that was gone, "Twist and Shout" that one is gone, too.
So, even had heard our entire act we had to try to do it better and we thought if we write the stuff there's no way for them to do it. That's how we started writing.
Ellen: Thank God people were doing that.
After commercials Paul talked about his book "Highs in the Clouds". Then he answered questions from the fans:
Fan #1: Is it true that you wife Heather didn't know you sang "Get Back"?
Paul: That's actually true, Yeah. Her youngest sister knows all Beatles stuff. But Heather, she just sort of missed it. I don't know why. I mean how could you miss The Beatles?
Ellen: I don't know. You can't. I don't know.
Paul: She was doing something at the time. she is like AC-DC and ELO. She knows about them.
Ellen: How did she figure out that you wrote that.
Paul: It was playing and she said: "Is this you?" and I said Yes, Darling upon it's a song called "Geat Back" and is veeery famous. (Laughter)
Fan #2: Is it true you that you were fake nails when you perform?
Paul: (joking) You have to tell everyone don't you on natiowide telly?... I actually have one fake nail (Paul showed his index finger of his left hand), And it was Heather's idea, cause when I play the guitar mainly when I do the song "Blackbird" I have a funny finger picking style and it's not a correct style and I strum the strings and at the end of the tour I wear the nail down and I got the blood and skin. I thought this is maybe not a good idea. Heather said: Put on acrilic nail on it and I said an acrilic WHAT?
So there we are at the nail parlor. (Paul showing his index finger again and people laughed).
Ellen: That's your answer.
The interview finished with Paul and Ellen dancing. After commercials Paul sang English Tea and Get Back.
