The Uncut 100
"FOR every Dylan, there has been a John Ford. For every Velvets, a Howard Hawks. For every Costello, a Scorsese."
So wrote editor Allan Jones a little over eight years ago in issue one of Uncut - the first magazine to bring together rock'n'roll and cinema in one dedicated package.
And so here we are, 100 months later; bigger and better, our passion for celebrating the greatest music and movie legends of all time undiminished.
Cause - we think - for a celebration; or rather, a lap of honour to commemorate the most seismic events in the last 50 years of sound and vision. Not just the records that rocked our world, but also the films that revolutionised the silver screen, the programmes that changed the face of television and the books that created shockwaves - all as chosen by Uncut's select panel of music and movie icons – including Keith Richards, Paul McCartney, Patti Smith, Michael Stipe, Lou Reed, Paul Weller, Noel Gallagher, Chris Martin, Robert Downey Jr, Alice Cooper, Moby, Ozzy Osbourne and more - and ranked together in the countdown to end all countdowns.
Naturally, compiling the definitive list of the records, films, TV shows and books that shook the world was no mean feat - hence our firm, but fair, one entry per artist/director system.
So which Beatles record made the grade? Which films have we nominated as having greater cultural impact than David Bowie and The Beach Boys? Which book pips The Clash to the finish line? Which TV programme caused a bigger stir than The Sex Pistols? And what, at the end of the day, is the most explosive artistic statement of the last five decades?
The answers to all these questions and more lie over the next 70 pages as we invite you to join us in a unique, star-studded extravaganza toasting the music and movies that shaped our rock'n'roll universe.
