В реестр добавляют записи, «достойные сохранения на все времена из-за их культурной, исторической или эстетической важности».
Каждый год реестр пополняется 25 наименованиями. На этот раз большую часть записей составили синглы, но есть и альбомы, например, «Like a Virgin» Мадонны и «Synchronicity» Police.
