Phil Ramone, who co-produced Ringo Starr's “Time Takes Time” and two Julian Lennon albums, among many others, died Saturday at 72, reported Billboard.com. The announcement of his death was made by his son, Matt. Billboard reported he had been hospitalized in February with an aortic aneurysm.
Ramone produced “Valotte” and “The Secret Value of Daydreaming” for Julian Lennon. For McCartney, he also produced the individual tracks “Once Upon a Long Ago,” “P.S. Love Me Do,” “Only Love Remains,” “Spies Like Us,” and “Strangehold.” He also did mixing for McCartney's “Ram,” according to the Hollywood Reporter.
His long list of credits, shown on All Music.com, includes work with Burt Bacharach, Bono, Ray Charles, Chicago, Natalie Cole, Bob Dylan, Aretha Franklin, Etta James, B.B. King, Madonna, Paul McCartney, Liza Minnelli, Sinead O'Connor, Luciano Pavarotti, Peter, Paul and Mary, Andre Previn, Carly Simon, Paul Simon, Frank Sinatra, Phoebe Snow, Rod Stewart and Stevie Wonder. His most recent project, according to his website, was Tony Bennett's “Viva Duets” album that paired him with Latin vocalists including Christina Aguilera, Gloria Estefan, Marc Anthony and Vicente Fernandez.
Ramone was nominated for 33 Grammy Awards, and won 14 of them, including a technical award for lifetime contributions to the recording industry. His awards include Album of the Year in 1976 for Paul Simon's “Still Crazy After All These Years.” He also wrote a book about the recording process called “Making Records: The Scenes Behind the Scenes.”
