Yoko Ono has a new album out Tuesday called "Between My Head and the Sky". That's news, of course. But more importantly, it's who's listed with her on the album. In short, the Plastic Ono Band is back.
Given Yoko's recording career and the unusual pattern it has followed, this normally wouldn't be anything to take notice of. After all, Yoko Ono has been a recording chameleon, going all over the place on her albums.
But the opener, "Waiting for the D Train," has the same brilliant edginess and guitar power that Yoko Ono and John Lennon created so superbly on "Walking on Thin Ice." Like "Thin Ice," it's very compelling.
The second track, "The Sun Is Down!," is more modern, but also humorous as Ono bounces around the melody and the electronic beat.
The rest of the album goes all over the place with Yoko exploring various rhythms and musical modes. "Hashire, Hashire" is heavily jazz influenced, "Feel the Sand" and "Healing" have quiet atmospheric moods, while "Moving Mountains" is more of Yoko being Yoko with shrieks and shouts.
It goes without saying that Yoko Ono's music won't make points with everyone. But it's interesting when you find yourself connecting with her music. Her original "Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band" album, a companion to John's, was amazing. Even more amazing is who was on the album with her: John Lennon, Klaus Voormann and Ringo Starr. It was far different than anything they'd ever done. (Not forgetting Ornette Coleman, who was also on it.)
Many years have passed between that album and "Between My Head and the Sky". The Plastic Ono Band was never meant to be a static group. The new band includes Keigo "Cornelius" Oyamada and members of his band, Sean Lennon, Yuka Honda of Cibo Matto plus Erik Friedlander, Shahzad Ismaily, Michael Leonhart, Daniel Carter and Indigo Street. But bringing up the name is a reminder of the past. And the memories -- renewed here -- are good.
