Зал славы R'n'R

Вчера вечером состоялась очередная церемония введения в Зал Славы Рок-н-Ролла.
В конце церемонии все участники исполнили Here comes The Sun.
As is tradition, the night ended with an all-star jam, including Talking Heads' cover of "Take Me to the River," Pitney's "He's a Rebel," a tribute to the late George Harrison in the form of "Here Comes the Sun," and the Hayes-penned (with David Porter) Sam and Dave classic "Hold On, I'm Coming."

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame welcomed its first
members from the new wave and punk eras Monday night, inducting The Ramones
and Talking Heads along with classic rockers Tom Petty and the
Heartbreakers, soul and R&B icon Isaac Hayes, versatile vocalist Brenda Lee
and singer/songwriter Gene Pitney.

Late guitarist Chet Atkins was also inducted, as was Jim Stewart, founder of
and driving force behind revolutionary soul music label Stax Records.

The hall's 17th annual induction ceremony got off to a rousing start with
Hayes performing his Oscar-winning "Theme from 'Shaft."'

Hayes, who saw eight of his albums crack the Top 20 in the early 1970s and
is perhaps best known today as the voice of Chef on the television cartoon
"South Park," said he got to the Hall by "never giving up on my dream."

Brenda Lee, who has sung rock, country and pop standards with equal
conviction for 50 years and recorded the holiday classic "Rocking Around the
Christmas Tree," was inducted by an admiring fan from a younger generation,
songstress Jewel.

Lee, known as "Little Miss Dynamite" because of the title of one of her
hits, said she was overwhelmed to be inducted after being nominated but not
selected previously.

Asked about the influence of her songs on younger generations of female
singers, the Georgia native said proudly, "It is very cool, isn't it?"

Gene Pitney made his mark on music in the early 1960s by penning several hit
records for other artists and then charting on his own.

Pitney's recording of "Only Love Can Break a Heart" by Burt Bacharach and
Hal David was his highest charting U.S. single, reaching No. 2. But in an
ironic twist, the song which kept Pitney from hitting the No. 1 spot was his
own "He's a Rebel," recorded by the Crystals. Pitney also wrote "Hello Mary
Lou," a smash for teen idol Ricky Nelson, and had great success with "Town
Without Pity."

Pitney smiled when asked how it felt to have other artists achieve greater
success with his songs than he did. "It's wonderful, especially every six
months when those (royalty) checks come in."

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers formed in Gainesville, Florida, in 1976.
Their third album, "Damn the Torpedoes," was a breakout record, yielding
singles that went on to become rock classics, including "Refugee," "Even the
Losers," "Don't Do Me Like That" and "Here Comes My Girl."

Jakob Dylan, son of Bob Dylan and front man of his own band The Wallflowers,
inducted the group.

"Rock 'n' roll star is probably the purest, absolute mainstream
manifestation of the American dream," Petty said. "It doesn't happen to many
people and it's incredible that it should happen to me."

It was a bittersweet night for The Ramones, the group from Queens who lost
founding member and lead singer Joey Ramone to cancer last year at the age
of 49. The group was saluted by the neo-punk trio Green Day, who ripped
through rapid-fire versions of several Ramone songs.

The rest of The Ramones and the last group to be inducted, Talking Heads,
thanked club owner Hilly Kristal for opening the downtown Manhattan dive
CBGB in 1973. Originally meant as a showcase for country, bluegrass and
blues, the dingy night spot became ground zero for the exploding punk and
new wave movements of 1970s.

Several of the inductees and others performed, with the Talking Heads
reuniting for the first time in more than a decade.

As is tradition, the night ended with an all-star jam, including Talking
Heads' cover of "Take Me to the River," Pitney's "He's a Rebel," a tribute
to the late George Harrison in the form of "Here Comes the Sun," and the
Hayes-penned (with David Porter) Sam and Dave classic "Hold On, I'm Coming."

Nominees announced for 2004 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame09-12) 14:10 PDT NEW YORK (AP) --

Former Beatle George Harrison, Prince, John Mellencamp and Jackson Browne are among the nominees on the 2004 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ballot.

Harrison, who died of cancer in November 2001, is already in the rock hall as a member of the Beatles. Former bandmates John Lennon and Paul McCartney preceded him for their solo work.

Previous nominees back for another try include the Sex Pistols, Black Sabbath, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Gram Parsons and Patti Smith. Other nominees include The Dells, The "5" Royales, Bob Seger, the Stooges, Traffic and ZZ Top.

Ballots were mailed this week to voting members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which is located in Cleveland.

Funk-rocker Prince has led a diverse career topped by his "Purple Rain" soundtrack, heartland rocker Mellencamp had a string of hits after dropping the middle name "Cougar" and songwriter Browne was a prominent member of the 1970s Los Angeles singer-songwriter scene.

Artists are eligible to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame after at least 25 years have passed since their first record was released. The inductees likely will be announced in December.

Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Inducts 2004 Class

Prince, the late George Harrison, Traffic, ZZ Top, Bob Seger, Jackson Browne, the Dells and Rolling Stone founder Jann Wenner were welcomed into the ranks of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last night (March 15) during a gala ceremony at New York's Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. Highlights from the event will be broadcast Sunday by VH1.

Decked out in a debonair white suit and black shirt, Prince kicked off the evening's proceedings by leading an ace eight-piece band through "Let's Go Crazy," "Sign 'O' the Times" and "Kiss," The latter track was teased with the horn-driven introduction to the Sam & Dave-popularized "Soul Man."

Just ahead of a new studio album and a major tour, which he claims will feature some of the final performances of his classic hits, the artist was celebrated as "one of our greatest inspirations" by OutKast during their induction speech. "Prince Rogers Nelson," group member Andre 3000 said. "The name ... it's just powerful!" Added Alicia Keys, "There are many kings, but there is only one Prince ... only one man who has defied restriction, defied the obvious and all the rules of the game."

"When I first started out in this music industry, I was most concerned with freedom: freedom to produce, freedom play all the instruments on my records, freedom to say anything I wanted to," Prince said during his acceptance speech, referencing his frequent creative battles with the labels that have released his music. "After much negotiation, Warner Bros. Records granted me my freedom, and I thank them for that."

Cautioning the scores of acts that have looked to him as a musical example, Prince noted, "Without real spiritual mentoring, too much freedom can lead to the soul's decay. And a word to the young artists: a real friend and mentor is not on your payroll. I wish all of you the best on this fascinating journey. It ain't over."

And Prince's night didn't end there. After the ceremony, he performed an exclusive show for members of his NPG Music Club at New York's Club Black.

Harrison, who died in late 2001 after a long battle with cancer, was inducted by his Traveling Wilburys bandmates Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne. "He often said he wasn't pursuing a solo career at all. He just loved playing music with his friends," Petty said of Harrison's post-Beatles years. "He was never preachy -- he led by example. He was a truly great man."

Lynne and Petty were joined by Steve Winwood on organ and Harrison's son Dhani on guitar for the Wilburys' smash hit "Handle With Care," followed by Harrison's "White Album" staple "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." Prince emerged from the side of the stage to join in on the latter about halfway through, unleashing an extended solo.

Earlier in the evening, Winwood took the stage with U.K. rock combo Traffic and showcased his lead guitar skills on a jam-laden version of "Dear Mr. Fantasy," accented by soulful organ accompaniment from Randall Bramblett. Although principal member Dave Mason joined Winwood and drummer Jim Capaldi to accept their awards, he did not perform until the closing jam.

Noting the potent psychedelic content of Traffic's catalog, inductor Dave Matthews said, "As a little kid, I thought they wrote really great music about cartoon characters. When I was in my early 20s, I realized they were seeing cartoon characters, probably!"

In his induction speech, Bruce Springsteen saluted not only Browne's "great songwriting," but also his ability to draw arenas full of good-looking women to his concerts. "While the E Street Band and I were sweating our asses off for hours just to put some fannies in the seats," Springsteen said with a chuckle, "Jackson is drawing more women than an Indigo Girls show!"

"Music is a very empowering thing and I'm happy to have had a lifetime to do it," Browne reflected. "Thank you for this job and thank you for this honor." The artist went on to perform "The Pretender" and his 1976 No. 11 Hot 100 hit "Running on Empty."

Seminal Illinois R&B vocal group the Dells dedicated their honor to the O'Jays, the Manhattans, the Whispers "and our homeboys the Chi-Lites," before performing their 1956 classic "Oh, What a Night" backed by the Paul Shaffer-led house band.

On the heels of an induction speech as off-beat as one would expect from the Rolling Stones' Keith Richards, Texas rock trio ZZ Top rocked through the familiar head-nodding grooves of "La Grange" and "Tush."

Kid Rock saluted Seger as "the most overlooked musician of our time. Being from Michigan, raised north of Detroit and still living there today, Bob Seger's music not only influenced me, it taught me to be proud of where I come from Bob Seger is the voice of the working man and living proof of the American dream."

After a short speech in which he thanked his Silver Bullet backing band and staffers at his longtime label, Capitol Records, Seger rattled off the slow-burning "Turn the Page" and "Old Time Rock'n'Roll," one of the most enduring rock hits of the past 25 years.

Rolling Stone's Wenner, who is also the vice chairman of the Rock Hall's executive board, was feted by Mick Jagger as "one of the first music critics who understood what we as artists felt. Jann almost single-handedly pioneered the idea of rock'n'roll as a vibrant art form. It was Jann and his staff that elevated our music to a place where it enjoys the status of other musical forms."

The evening wrapped with the traditional all-star jam, this time on Chuck Berry's "Sweet Little Rock & Roller" and Mason's "Feelin' Alright." While the Dells crowded around the mic, Kid Rock harmonized with Browne as Richards traded licks with ZZ Top's Billy F. Gibbons.

Eric Clapton Declined Offer To Induct George Harrison Into Rock Hall
(LAUNCH, 03/15/2004 3:00 PM)

By LAUNCH Radio Networks

Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne will be at Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony Monday (March 15) at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City to honor George Harrison. But they might not have been the first choice to speak on behalf of their Traveling Wilburys bandmate. Eric Clapton was asked to do it, but he passed on the offer.

Clapton said he decided not to do it because he's getting ready for his next round of tour dates, and also because it's time someone else talked about Harrison. "On one hand, I have a lot of work to do," Clapton said. "I have slightly different personnel in the band, so it needs a proper input. And on the other hand, I think it will be befitting for someone else to do that induction. I mean, I think I've just been over-associated with George's memory, you know? There's no other reason than that--I just think that someone else needs to share in it."

Having said that, Clapton is very happy that Harrison is being honored, and he said the last couple of years have shown how important Harrison really was. "The best thing that came out of his passing was that we all got to remember exactly what he'd contributed, you know, as much as any of the other guys--and maybe more so," Clapton said, "because it was an individual achievement. You know, Lennon and McCartney's one thing, and Paul is one thing, and John's one, but I think George--in my opinion, I found him, his work the most accessible, and the strongest, for me to tune in to."
