'VERY NAUGHTY BOYS' CHRONICLES HISTORY OF HANDMADE FILMS

Handmade Films also later went on to produce Monty Python at the Hollywood Bowl, Time Bandits, Nuns on the Run, and many other famous British films. To mark the recent release of the paperback version of the book, retitled 'Very Naughty Boys,' Robert Sellers himself agreed to tell the story of how and why he wrote the book...
So why did I write a book about HandMade Films? Partly because nobody had done it before. It amazed me that here was arguably Britain’s most successful film company of the 1980s, headed by an ex-Beatle in George Harrison and Britain’s greatest comedy team in Monty Python, and yet no one had tackled the subject. And what a subject!

I’d always been a fan of the Pythons and HandMade’s movies, especially the early ones like Life of Brian, Time Bandits, A Private Function and Bullshot, but it was the emergence of a much darker tale that convinced me of the project’s worth. I wrote very early on to Bruce Robinson, creator of Withnail and I, asking for an interview, and received a letter stating that he found HandMade to be a disreputable company and wanted nothing more to do with them. He was still probably pissed off that he never got any royalties from Withnail, despite it making millions over the years. So that pricked my interest right away.

Then I interviewed Steve Woolley, who co-produced Mona Lisa with HandMade, and for over two hours he ranted and raved about how he disliked Denis O’Brien, Harrison’s partner in HandMade and one-time manager of the Pythons. He droned on about how O’Brien messed about with his staff and the talent, interfering with the movies. I realised I’d opened a very bitter can of worms as other people revealed very weird tales concerning O’Brien’s dubious business practices and paranoid personality. Of course, it reached a very nasty conclusion when HandMade crashed in flames at the decade’s close when it was revealed that O’Brien had been robbing Harrison blind.

Luckily the great majority of the actors, writers, directors and producers from all of HandMade’s films were only too happy to relive their experiences and share funny and sometimes painful memories. I also spoke with the people who worked at the HandMade office down the years.

Of course getting the Pythons to talk about their association with HandMade was a huge honour and I think makes my book invaluable for any Python fan. I was very lucky to get John Cleese first. I interviewed him for TV Times and asked if he’d talk about HandMade which he was happy to do. Once I had Cleese, my chances of snaring the other Pythons increased. And so it proved. I happily chatted to Eric Idle from his home in the States and with Terry Jones from his London office. But I was incredibly privileged to be invited to the homes of Terry Gilliam and Michael Palin. I’ll never forget being left alone in Gilliam’s study, as he rushed out to make me a cappuccino, wandering round looking at numerous props from his movies that hung from the ceiling and walls - the boat from Time Bandits, a doll of Jonathan Pryce used for the flying sequences in Brazil, some small effects dolls from Baron Munchhausen. Nor will I forget the moment when Michael Palin opened a drawer as we chatted one afternoon and pulled out a binder which contained original hand-written Python sketches, one of which he proceeded to act out for me, doing all the voices. Stopping he then nonchalantly announced, ‘Oh that’s a sketch we never used.’ So not only had I been treated to a personal performance from Michael Palin, but of an unknown Python sketch! I must say that I owe a particularly huge debt to Michael as he provided my book with a wonderful foreword. I was also delighted to talk to Carol Cleveland, whose memories, particularly of the Python’s legendary concert at the Hollywood Bowl, warmly resonated down the phone line.

I was equally fortunate to speak with a whole host of other terrific people like Robbie Coltrane, Richard Griffiths, Alan Bennett, Richard E. Grant, Paul McGann, Neil Jordan and many others, all of whom contributed wonderfully humorous and biting anecdotes.

From start to finish the book took two years to research and write. My only regret is that I never got to speak or meet with George Harrison. He knew the project was happening and I heard through an intermediary that he would have read the manuscript before publication, maybe then to add his thoughts, as previously he’d been reluctant to talk, to drag up old wounds. Unfortunately a few months before I finished the book he died. I’ve dedicated the book to him. It was the least I could do.

(‘Very Naughty Boys’ was published in paperback in the UK, 30 September 2004, by Metro/John Blake.)

Только сегодня, спустя четверть века, сподобился посмотреть замечательный фильм Терри Гильяма "Time Bandits".

The musical underscoring and orchestrations are credited to Mike Moran, with Ray Cooper, Elton John's longtime percussionist, serving as producer of the musical material, but executive producer George Harrison is also credited with "songs and additional material": Harrison did in fact write songs for the film at the request of co-executive producer Denis O'Brien, but the song score was apparently developed without the participation of Terry Gilliam.[citation needed] As a result, the only song attributed to Harrison is "Dream Away", which the former Beatle performs over the credits. Sometime following the release of Time Bandits, "Dream Away" was included on Harrison's album Gone Troppo, on his own Dark Horse record label. The recording of "Dream Away" was produced by George Harrison and Ray Cooper in collaboration with Phil MacDonald; Mike Moran appeared on keyboards and synthesizers; and Billy Preston, Syreeta and Sarah Ricor joined Harrison as backing vocalists.

Благодарю за подробную информацию.
Странно, что я её сам не признал, хотя слушал Gone Troppo неоднократно...
Или в альбом вошла иная версия?
Здорово!

Filmography
George is the former Beatle most associated with the film industry due to his connection with HandMade Films. His film work has been quite extensive, appearing as himself, in acting roles, as a composer, producer, director and miscellaneous crew member, in addition to his numerous guest appearances on television.
His first stint as an actor was in A Hard Day's Night, where scriptwriter Alun Owen wrote him into a solo scene.
Paul and George split up in search of Ringo and George wanders into a building opposite the theatre they are appearing in.
He peers through a glass door where a young woman is typing. He goes in, about to ask her if she had seen Ringo and she says, 'Oh, there you are.'
'I'm sorry, I must have made a mistake,' says George. 'You haven't, you're just late,' she says. She looks George over and remarks, 'Oh, yes, he's going to be very pleased with you.' 'Is he?' asks a puzzled George.
'Yes, you're quite a feather in the cap.' She picks up the phone on her desk. 'I've got one ... Oh, I think so ... Oh, yes, he can talk. Well ... I think you ought to see him.'
She crosses to a door behind her desk that has gilt lettering with the words 'Simon Marshall' on it and jerks her head at George. 'Well, come in.'
George apologises and follows her into the room. There is a man in the room, with some assistants. Behind him is a poster stating: 'WAY OUT. Your Own TV Special With Susan Campey. Director, Simon Marshall.'
The secretary indicates George and says, 'Will this do, Simon?' He looks George up and down, then nods and says, 'Not bad, dolly, not really bad.' Flicking his hand at George he says, 'Turn around, chicky baby.'
George does a little turn.
'Oh, yes, a definite poss. He'll look good alongside Susan,' he says.
Then turning to George again he says, 'All right, Sunny Jim, this is all going to be quite painless.'
One of the assistants suddenly seems to recognise George and turns to Marshall.
An irritated Marshall says, 'Don't breathe on me, Adrian.' Adrian tries to talk, 'But . . .'
Then George comments, 'Look, I'm terribly sorry but I'm afraid there's been some sort of misunderstanding.'
Marshall says, 'Oh, you can come off it with us. You don't have to do the old adenoidal glottal stop and carry on for our benefit.' 'I'm afraid you don't understand,' George says. 'Oh my God - he's a natural,' says Marshall.
The secretary, looking slightly worried, says, 'Well, I did tell them not to send us any more real ones.'
Marshall nods. 'They ought to know by now that the phonies are much easier to handle. Still, he's a good type.'
He then turns to George and says, 'We want you to give us your opinion on some clothes for teenagers.'
'Oh, by all means. I'd be quite prepared for that eventuality,' says George.
'Well, not your real opinion, naturally,' says Marshall, 'It'll be written out and you'll learn it.' He glances nervously at his secretary and says, 'Can he read?'
'Of course I can,' says George.
'I mean lines, ducky - can you read lines?'
'I'll have a bash,' says George.
A pleased Marshall says, 'Good. Sweetie, get him whatever it is they drink ... a cokearama?'
'Та,' says George.
Marshall says, 'Well, at least he's polite, Tony, show him the shirts.'
One of the aides begins to lay out some shirts in front of George.
Marshall oozes, 'You'll like these. You'll really "dig" them. They're "fab" ... and all the other pimply hyperboles.'
George looks at the shirts, frowns, then comments, 'I wouldn't be seen dead in them. They're dead grotty.'
Marshall is taken aback. 'Grotty?'
'Yeah, grotesque,' says George.
Marshall turns to his secretary, 'Make a note of that word and give it to Susan.'
Then he muses, 'I think it's rather touching, really. Here's this kid trying to give me his utterly valueless opinion when I know for a fact that within four weeks he'll be suffering from a violent inferiority complex and loss of status if he isn't wearing one of these nasty things. Of course they're grotty, you wretched nit. That's why they were designed ... but that's what you'll want.'
'But I won't,' says George.
Marshall begins to get upset, 'You can be replaced, you know, chicky baby.'
'I don't care,' says George.
Marshall continues, 'And that pose is out too, Sunny Jim. The new thing is to care passionately, and be right wing. Anyway, you won't meet Susan if you don't co-operate.'
'And who's this Susan when she's at home?' asks George. Then he remembers, 'You mean that posh bird who gets everything wrong?'
'I beg your pardon,' says Marshall.
'Oh, yes,' says George, 'the lads frequently gather round the set to watch her for a giggle. Once we even all sat down and wrote those letters saying how gear she was and all that rubbish ...'
'She's a trendsetter. It's her profession!' says Marshall.
'She's a drag,' says George. 'A well-known drag. We turn the sound down on her ...'
Marshall is furious. 'Get him out of here,' he storms.
'Have I said something amiss?' George asks.
Tony and Adrian hustle George to the door. He shrugs them off, turns to Marshall and says, 'Sorry about the shirts.'
'Get him out,' screams Marshall, then looks worried and turns to his secretary. 'You don't think he's a new phenomenon, do you?'
'You mean an early clue to the new direction,' she says.
Marshall rummages in his desk, saying, 'Where's the calendar?' then seems relieved, saying, 'No, he's just a troublemaker. The change isn't due for three weeks. All the same ... make a note not to extend Susan's contract. Let's not take any unnecessary chances.'

Along with Ringo's main scene, this was the best acting scene of a Beatle in the movie. Paul's scene ended up on the cutting floor and there were only short scenes for John and not one written around him.
As a producer, George was executive producer of all the HandMade films. He was also producer of Black And Blue in 1980, Privates On Parade in 1982 and Little Malcolm in 1974. He was also producer of 1972's Concert For Bangla Desh film and is down as producer, with the other members of the Beatles, of Let It Be and Magical Mystery Tour.
His composing credits began in 1964 with A Hard Day's Night for the song 'Don't Bother Me'. He also receives his credits for the compositions that appeared in the Beatles films Help] Yellow Submarine and Let It Be.
His first film soundtrack was Wonderwall in 1969 and his song 'Here Comes The Sun' was included in the 1978 film Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. The same year saw some of his songs included in the film / Wanna Hold Your Hand. He composed songs and additional material for 1981's Time Bandits and songs for Shanghai Surprise in 1986 and Lethal Weapon 2 in 1989. His song 'What Is Life' was in the soundtrack of Goodfellas in 1990 and the 1999 movie Big Daddy. His song 'Here Comes The Sun' was included on the 1993 Point Of No Return soundtrack and he had a number of his songs in the 1995 television miniseries The Beatles Anthology. The Imax film Everest in 1998 included songs by George, while his songs also appear in two films in the year 2000, The Beatles Revolution and The Beatles Yellow Submarine Adventure. He provided songs and addition material for Ram Dass, Fierce Grace in 2001 and his song 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' was included in the television special 'Party At The Palace: The Queen's Concerts, Buckingham Palace' in 2002.
As an actor George appeared in A Hard Day's Night, Help! and Magical Mystery Tour and as himself in Let It Be. His singing voice was used in the 1965 animated series The Beatles and the 1968 animated feature Yellow Submarine. George appeared as an elderly
interviewer in the 1978 spoof The Rutles and the same year made a guest appearance in the TV movie Ringo. In 1979 he portrayed Mr Papadopolous in Life Of Brian and was a nightclub singer in Shanghai Surprise in 1986.
He has also appeared as a miscellaneous crew member on two occasions, in the 1979 film Being There and as a guitarist on 'Leave The Light Out' in the 1990 video Belinda Carlisle: Runaway Videos.
George has appeared as himself in numerous television specials, videos and films, whether in a personal appearance, cameo spot or in archive footage. Here is a selection: What's Happening! The Beatles In The USA (1964), Around The Beatles (1964), A Hard Day's Night (1964), Pop Gear (1965), Help!
