On This Day

1964
Sam Cooke began a two-week residency at New York’s famous Copacabana Club.

Allen Klein, who was his manager at the time, promoted the event with a 200 square foot billboard teaser in Times Square which posed the question “Who’s The Biggest Cook in Town?”.

1965
With The Beatles in Italy in the middle of a short European tour, British publishers Jonathan Cape published Beatle John Lennon’s second book “A Spaniard In The Works”.

It was published in America a week later by Simon & Schuster and was an instant best seller.

1967
Guitarist Zal Yanovsky(photo), who was leaving the group to pursue a solo career, performed with The Lovin’ Spoonful for the last time when the group appeared at the Forest Hills Music Festival in New York.

He had given plenty of notice of his plans and his replacement, Jerry Yester, had already been recruited to take his place.

1973
A two-year investigation into corruption in the record industry came to a head when the US attorney in Newark, New Jersey, indicted 19 record industry executives on various counts of income tax evasion and payola.

Those named included the head of Arista Records (and former president of Columbia Records) Clive Davis, and Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, creators of the Philadelphia sound of the .70s.

1990

He returned to the line-up five years later.

The Glastnbuty Festival, which was threatened when the famous Pyramid stage burnt down two weeks earlier before a temporary replacement was erected, was marred by a shooting (fortunately, no-one was seriously hurt) and the festival’s first death (froma drug overdose).

2002
Britain’s Court of Appeal refused to re-open Elton John’s $21 million lawsuit against accountants Price Waterhouse Coopers.

2005
“Make Poverty History” was the theme of the Glastonbury Festival which raised over Ј1,350,000 for Greenpeace, Oxfam, other charities and good causes.

The event was dampened by a huge downpour on the Saturday.

Among the performers were Coldplay, The Belly Dance Superstars, Razorlight, New Order, Brian Wilson, The Wailers, James Blunt, Beautiful South, Babyshambles, The Killers, Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel, Ska Cubano, K.T Tunstall, Kaiser Chiefs, The Subways, Chas n Dave, The La’s and Elvis Costello.
